Good News - New Three Stooges Movie: Bad News - Cast with A-List Actors

march.26.09
(ChattahBox) — As a Stooges fan I welcome just about any new project to tell about their lives or extend their comic legacy. However Hollywood has a way of going way over the top sometimes when putting a new movie together, and this seems to be a case in point. MGM and the Farrelly brothers are casting is movie with working title, “The Three Stooges,” like their hoping it will garner Academy Awards.

In a tactic probably meant to get a studio to buy into the movie, the Farrelly Brother’s decided to go A-List actors all the way and are supposedly in final negotiations to have Jim Carrey to play Jerome “Curly” Howard, Benicio Del Toro to play Moe Howard (Curly’s brother), and Sean Penn to play Larry Fine. Daily Variety claims there are plans to have Carry gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Curly.

When I first heard this casting I thought, okay it’s a biopic, and they are going to go the serious route telling the background story of the Stooges long road and many struggles to succeed. But as it turns out the story is supposedly set to be a comedy built around the antics of the three characters played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly have been trying to bring this project together for more than a decade with three different studios, so apparently hiring big stars was the ticket they needed to get a studio excited. I really hope the best for the film considering it’s subject matter, but to me it’s everything that’s wrong with Hollywood today in the way they have gone casting wise. Production is set to begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010.
